Background Information
Professional profile:

Mr Shetty is a consultant orthopaedic and knee surgeon at the Spire Alexandra Hospital.  He is a former senior lecturer at Kings' College in London, where he taught and examined both undergraduate and postgraduate students.  He is also involved with training the oprthopaedic surgeons at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London.  He is leading some of the world class research in knee surgery.  His reputation as a knee surgeon and orthopaedic teacher attracts surgeons and patients from all over the world.

He underwent his postgraduate surgical training in the UK and completed his masters degree from the University of Liverpool.  He completed his Orthopaedic Registrar training at Kings, Guys and St Thomas' Orthopaedic Rotation and gained his FRCS Orthopaedic surgery by the Intercollegiate Board.  He was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training by the Joint Commitee on Higher Surgical Training (JCHST)

Prof Shetty was a Consultant knee surgeon at Medway Maritime Hospital and Kings College Hospital in the past.  He specialises in arthroscopic knee surgery, sports injury and knee arthroplasty.  He has a special interest in cartilage repair and cartilage transplant surgery, ligament reconstruction (cruciate ligaments) and patello-femoral (knee cap) disorders.  He also performs both partial (UKR) and total knee replacements(TKR).  He uses computer navigation and minimally invasive techniques for knee replacements.  He has undertaken some of the most complex revision knee surgery and limb reconstruction surgery.

Mr Shetty has been recognised as one of the most innovative surgeons by his colleagues and a gifted surgeon by his teachers.  Apart from his surgical innovations he is the first surgeon to use the robotics in arthroscopic knee surgery in the world and gel based cartilage repair surgery in the UK.  Recently he has been developing some of the revolutionary surgical techniques for cartilage repair, Gel ACI (Autologous chondrocyte Implantation) with Professor Kim, Director of cell therapy, Catholic University Hospital Seol, South Korea.

Mr Shetty is the founder and director of the Kent Knee Unit based at the Spire Alexandra Hospital, which was established in response to the requirements and management of knee disorders. Mr Shetty established this with his specialist colleagues following his experience in the USA.  It offers the highest quality team approach to the knee problem with rapid access to sophisticated diagnosis and treatment, treating some of the top athletes in the UK.

He has been highly respected and admired both by his students and colleagues.  He has authored many books and published extensively in the peer reviewed journals.  He is the winner of the Fred Heatley prize for research and Elsevier prize for best publication. In 2008 he was awarded the silver medal in recognition of his teaching and research.  He has travelled widely and given many national and international lectures, recently being appointed as a visiting professor of orthopaedics.
