Dr Saul Halpern graduated from The Royal London Hospital Medical College, University of London in 1987 with an additional First Class Honours degree in Pharmacology. He completed higher medical training at St Bartholomew’s and Guy’s Hospitals, London, before undertaking higher specialist training in Dermatology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and The Royal Liverpool University Hospital between 1992 and 1998. During this time he also won a research fellowship in Biomedical Pharmacology at the William Harvey Institute, London studying the effects of steroids on skin cell biology.
He was appointed consultant dermatologist for West Kent in August 1998, based at the Medway Maritime Hospital and also works at Maidstone Hospital. Within the Dermatology Department he has special interests in skin cancer and skin cancer surgery, being a core member of the West Kent Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. He also takes lead responsibilities for Phototherapy (light treatments), Clinical Governance and Teledermatology. He is Educational Supervisor for trainee dermatologists from the Kent and Sussex Deanery based at Medway Maritime Hospital and is well recognised not only for educational work with local GPs but also for presenting at national and international meetings and congress.
In recent years his main research interests have focused on Teledermatology (the use of communication technology and digital imagery to provide distant dermatology expertise) and he is widely regarded as a national expert in this field. He has published in and is a reviewer for leading journals including TE British Journal of Dermatology. Currently he is the chairman of the British Teledermatology Society and Vice President of the International Society of Teledermatology.
Since 2003 Dr Halpern has developed an interest in aesthetic dermatology with further training and experience in cosmetic treatments for private patients such as anti-wrinkle treatments (Botox and Dermal fillers), Chemical peels, Veinwave and Micro needling techniques for facial rejuvenation, Pigmentary abnormalities and acne scarring.
As a highly trained and experienced dermatologist Dr Halpern can advise and investigate all skin conditions including moles, skin tumours, acne, psoriasis, eczema and skin allergies. He strongly believes in giving patients time to fully explain the nature of their condition and treatment options available.
