What is infertility?
Infertility is an inability to get pregnant after 12 months of regular sexual intercourse, without the use of protection. This does not mean that you are unable to have children, as fertility investigations and treatments can be provided to help increase the chances of pregnancy.
What is the process?
If you are concerned about failure to conceive over a long period of time then you could ask your GP for a referral. Spire Alexandra Hospital has highly qualified gynaecologists that are very experienced in dealing with couples that are trying to conceive. They will take a history from both partners, check the results of any tests previously undertaken and ensure that any outstanding investigations or examinations are completed in order to make the correct diagnosis. This will be discussed with the couple and treatment can then be arranged.
About age
In the past 25 years, the percentage of births to women aged 30 or over has doubled. This very evident trend of delaying childbirth until career or other lifestyle objectives have been achieved has consequences which many women are fully prepared to risk, although a proportion may be insufficiently aware of the decline infertility which begins in the early 30s. A more steep curve of decline occurs after 35 years of age.
