Mr Smith graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1989 and following pre-registration jobs in Scotland took a short service commission in the army. He travelled widely with the forces and completed his basic surgical training. At this early stage of his career knee surgery was his main interest. Mr Smith completed his orthopaedic training at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry and the district hospitals of North Wales.

In order to enhance his expertise in knee surgery, Mr Smith undertook a specialist knee fellowship in Adelaide, Australia. After which he travelled with the British Knee Society as a fellow, visiting centres in the USA, Europe and the UK. His training has always been focused on knee surgery, with a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery and the treatment of early arthritic problems.

He has a particular interest in osteotomy around the knee and long term outcome studies of procedures performed by him. Mr Smith also has a major interest in revision, total and unicompartmental knee replacement using minimal invasive techniques where possible.

Mr Smith has a young son at school in Chester and spends much time as possible with him sailing the waters of North Wales  indulging their shared love of all watersports. In the winter Mr Smith chases his son arround on a snowboard.
