I became a consultant in 1990. I co-operate with 11 other orthopaedic surgeons at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, each supplying complimentary skills to give an integrated modern orthopaedic service. I cover most lower limb surgery with the exception of knee ligament reconstruction. My particular expertise is foot and ankle surgery. In addition to general orthopaedic training, I spent two years full time foot surgery research in a specialist unit at Northwick Park Hospital. I am a convener of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Instructional Course and the Royal College of Surgeons Masterclass in Foot & Ankle Surgery. I lecture frequently at national & international meetings. I have an additional interest in footwear and orthotics.

I aim to explain what is wrong, and outline the possibilities for treatment, without the use of complex jargon. Analogies from everyday life, drawings and computer demonstration are a great help. I am keen to employ techniques which minimise pain after operation. The broad deformed forefoot, bunions, claw toes, the foot that rolls over, sports injuries, the ankle that gives way, ankle pain with reduced movement, treatment of arthritis and reconstruction of foot & ankle after injury or previous unsuccessful surgery are some of the conditions that fall within the scope of my practice. I am a national advisor on post polio problems in the foot and ankle and the North of England advisor on Charcot Marie Tooth neuropathy.

Where surgery is required on the ankle, an increasing number of procedures can be undertaken by keyhole surgery to both front and back of the ankle.

Hip and knee joint replacement also form a significant part of my practice. I undertake Birmingham surface replacement hips and cementless replacement in the younger patient.

I am married with adult sons. I enjoy outdoor pursuits, especially skiing and fly fishing. I maintain strong connections with the Lake District, where I lived as a child and with Chamonix in the French Alps where I ski and climb. I enjoy wood work and take a keen interest in house restoration. I like drawing and put this to use in producing my own anatomical illustrations. I have a practical interest in computing. I enjoy music, theatre and cooking.
