Professional profile:
I trained at Liverpool University Medical School before qualifying in 1981. My early postgraduate training was in Merseyside and the Wirral. After gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1984, I undertook research (`silent myocardial ischaemia¿ in patients with acute myocardial infarction) at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In 1989 I became registrar in cardiology at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Whilst based in Scotland I became trained in cardiac catheterisation, permanent pacing, echocardiography, transoesophageal echo and coronary angioplasty. I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine by the University of Liverpool in 1993. I became senior registrar in cardiology at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals in 1993 and was appointed consultant cardiologist and physician at Wirral Hospitals NHS Trust in 1994, and currently undertake non-invasive tests (e.g. echo and exercise testing) and invasive procedures (e.g. cardiac catheterisation and permanent pacing). I was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1999.
