I currently work solely in the private sector (having left the NHS in 2001), offering a comprehensive knee problem service, which is highly specialised rather than generalist. If I do not feel a problem lies within my area of expertise I usually offer a referral to an alternative specialist who has more experience in that area.
I cross-refer to surgeons both within the UK and also abroad if necessary. New patients are usually seen in combined clinics with Orthopaedic Physicians so that a holistic view can be taken of a knee issue and all options, including non-operative as well as operative, can be discussed.
I have access to high class local Radiology services. In particular MRI scans at Spire Windsor Clinic have been set up specifically for knee problems. The Consultant Radiologists that report the MRI scans are specialised in the field of knee problems and their work is audited after operative procedures.
My surgical practice is largely limited to arthroscopic surgery of the knee. This includes arthroscopy for meniscal and articular cartilage problems as well as my main interest, which is management of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) problems. I also have a specific interest in ACL injury in children and adolescents. Other areas of interest are in the unstable knee in general, osteotomy and prevention of injury. I do not perform joint replacement surgery but work closely with colleagues who specialise in such procedures.
I have a very close relationship with local and regional physiotherapists, who form an integral part of the patient management pathway. I encourage close communication and co-operation between myself, the patient and the physiotherapist. I am regularly invited to lecture in the UK and abroad on knee-related topics and attend UK and International Conferences as a delegate as well. I have organised an international knee symposium in 2003 and most recently in 2008.
My practice aims to offer an efficient diagnostic service with communication by e-mail and telephone (if preferred) rather than patients needing to attend the outpatient department simply to receive their results. I also aim to offer a choice in the treatment plans that are available.
