Mr Rothnie qualified from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London in 1981 and was awarded the Bentley Prize for House Officers. He undertook postgraduate surgical training in a number of London Hospitals and carried out cancer research at Bristol Royal Infirmary and The Royal Free Hospital, London. This led to the award of a Master of Surgery Degree from the University of London.
He was a Senior Registrar at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital prior to his appointment as a Consultant General Surgeon to Southend University Hospital NHS Trust in 1994.
Mr Rothnie established the specialist breast unit at Southend Hospital and developed the ‘open access’ hernia service. He is the Director of Screening for South Essex Breast Screening Service and lead clinician for breast services.
For the last eleven years he has acted as Quality Assurance surgeon for the NHS Breast Screening Programme in both the London and Eastern regions. He serves on the Executive of the National Committee of the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) at BASO. He is Chairman of the ABS at BASO National Screening Audit Group.
