Dr Joe O’Brien qualified at the Royal London Hospital after previously obtaining a first class honours degree in physiology from the University of London. His gastroenterology training was at the Royal London, St Marks and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

His previous research interests were in functional gut disorders, stress induced disturbance of autonomic function and endoscopic control of upper GI bleeding.

He is at present consultant physician/ gastroenterologist at Southend Hospital NHS Trust where he has worked since 1991. His major interests lie in therapeutic endoscopy, functional gut disorders and the management of gastrointestinal cancer.

Dr O'Brien have practiced at the Spire Wellesley Hospital since 1991.
