If you are very overweight, losing weight can change your life. Weight loss surgery (also known as obesity surgery or bariatric surgery) in the form of gastric by-pass, intragastric balloon or gastric banding may be the solution for you. Spire Healthcare offers safe and effective weight loss surgery at 25 of its hospitals throughout the UK.
Surgery is only part of the solution – we also have dedicated weight loss surgery support teams
Our patients tell us that weight loss surgery gives them the chance to do things they never thought they could – play with their kids, play sports or go on a long haul holiday.
Research has shown that weight loss surgery works better than weight-loss drugs or diets. That’s why Spire Healthcare offers a weight loss surgery service tailored to you. By tailoring our service specifically to your needs, we offer you your best possible chance of success. We offer gastric band, gastric by-pass, and intra-gastric balloon operations. Your weight loss surgery will be undertaken by an experienced bariatric surgeon in one of our safe, clean private hospitals. Surgery is only part of the solution – we also have dedicated weight loss surgery support teams including bariatric specialist nurses, physicians and dietitians.
We provide ongoing dietary advice and support. Our dietitians, who are experienced in advising patients dealing with obesity, will provide you with advice and support throughout your weight loss journey – from your first appointment until long after your surgery. We can also arrange access to local weight loss surgery patient support groups.
When can Bariatric Surgery be offered?
NICE Guidance on obesity (2006) recommends that surgery be considered for people with severe obesity if:
- They have a BMI of 40kg/m2 or more, or between 35kg/ m2 and 40 kg/m2 and other significant disease (for example type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure) that could be improved if they lost weight
- All appropriate non-surgical measures have failed to achieve or maintain adequate clinically beneficial weight management for at least six months
- They are receiving or will receive intensive specialist management
- They are generally fit for anaesthesia and surgery
- They commit to the need for long-term follow-up
