Frequently Asked Questions about VNUS Closure® for varicose veins

What is VNUS ClosureFast?
The VNUS ClosureFast™ procedure is a minimally invasive treatment alternative with less pain and less bruising when compared to traditional vein stripping surgery and laser treatment. Using the Closure® system, the diseased veins are closed by inserting the Closure catheter into a vein and heating the vein wall using temperature-controlled RF energy. Heating the vein wall causes collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. After the vein is sealed shut, blood then naturally reroutes to healthy veins.

How quickly can I go back to work?
Normal activities can usually be resumed almost immediately and most patients are back to work within a day or two.

Will there be any scarring, swelling or bruising after the procedure?
Patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising, or swelling after they have the procedure.

Is the procedure covered by my medical insurance?
Most major health insurers cover the VNUS ClosureFast™ procedure.  You will need to check with your insurance provider to be sure of your exact level of cover.

I don't have medical insurance, how much does it cost?
An exact price cannot be given until after your initial consultation with a surgeon (approx £150) and she or he has confirmed that treatment is suitable and that no further tests are required.  However, general guide prices are:
One leg under local anaesthetic  - £1,900
One leg under general anaesthetic  - £2,555
Two legs (general anaesthetic only)  - £3,145

Who performs the procedure?
At Spire Washington Hospital there are two consultant general surgeons who perform the VNUS Closure Fast procedure, Mr S Vetrivel and Mr I Hawthorn.
