Andrew Wilkie, physiotherapy patient at Spire Washington Hospital

"Looking back it must be almost twenty years since I first visited the Physio department at Spire Washington Hospital. I’d started road running over the winter to get some stamina work done leading up to the next cricket season and was having problems with shin splints. I would never knock the NHS, which performs a difficult task pretty well, but the difference I found at Washington was considerable and very pleasant. The staff really listened to the circumstances leading to the injury, the precise symptoms, and the level of recovery which would be needed to carry on with not just everyday life but the most important thing to me, my sport.

"This level of service has never waned over the many years I have used the department, and as one of life’s injury prone, I have returned many times. The surroundings are clean, comfortable and modern. There is no long wait for appointments and these can be made at convenient times including evenings and weekends. On occasions I have been able to arrange to see a physio on the morning before an important match for some manipulation or other treatment so I could be in the best condition possible for the game.

"The treatment given is not just ‘patch up and send away’. Care is taken to get to the root cause of injuries. As well as providing therapy, the patient can expect to be given one or a series of exercises to be carried out at home between visits and questions will be asked if there are not done! As a sportsman I respect this type of injury management and understand tat especially after severe injuries or even surgery, rehabilitation is hard work and must be tackled by the patient as well as the practitioner.

"It is this approach towards each case that impresses me most. I am an amateur sportsman but I have a professional attitude towards my sport. It is no good to me if my knee, ankle, back, shoulder or anything prevents me from performing to the best of my ability. I need speedy quality treatment and guidance to get back to fitness, the physio team at Spire Washington provides this. I will get injured again, and I will be back!"
