Mr Attwood is a research and teaching oriented surgeon with an extensive research programme in the disease areas below. He applies many new minimal invasive techniques to gastro-intestinal and hernia surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is applied to appropriate simple and complex abdominal problems to aid in diagnosis and allow rapid recovery from therapy.

He complements this with flexible endoscopic techniques including endoscopic ultrasound for diagnosis and endoscopic mucosal resection, argon plasma beam, dilatation and intubation allowing alternatives to long hospital stay for most gastro-intestinal surgical procedures. Team working is a priority, with specialist gastro-intestinal radiologists and physicians at Spire Washington Hospital, supported by dedicated technicians in gastro-intestinal physiology producing an integrated approach to gastroenterology.

He is the chairman of an advanced practical skills course for consultants to train in team working across disciplines, and is a founding member of GORD alliance, a multidisciplinary professional support group for patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
