Professional profile:
I perform about 600 cataract operations per year, including complicated cataracts (small pupils, cataracts associated with uveitis) under local, topical or general anaesthesia. All operations are by small incision phacoemulsification.

I have a joint clinic with an orthoptist at Spire Washington Hospital where I perform both standard and adjustable squint surgery. My total practice includes over 100 squint procedures per year.

I have extensive experience of uveitis as I hold a weekly uveitis subspecialist clinic. I treat macular degeneration and I am trained in the assessment of patients for treatment by photodynamic therapy.

I qualified from Cambridge in 1983 and trained in Windsor, Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and Leicester, and was appointed as a consultant in 1992. I am the clinical director of the Ophthalmology Department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.

I live in Northumberland and am married with two young daughters, Katie and Amy. When they allow me,I escape into a cabinet-making workshop.
