I have been a Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon for 26 years. I perform all aspects of vascular surgery, in particular endovenous surgery for varicose veins. My general surgical expertise is in hernia repair. I introduced Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for varicose veins to the Spire Washington Hospital in 2002, soon after the technique came to the UK from the USA. Consequently, as I have been performing this procedure for nearly 16 years, I have one of the largest experiences of the procedure in the North East of England. I perform over 40 hernia repairs annually.
My vascular specialty is in arterial and venous disease. I perform aortic surgery, carotid artery surgery and all aspects of lower limb bypass surgery. Varicose veins are a particular specialty and I perform a full range of varicose vein operations, particularly radiofrequency ablation under both general and local anaesthesia.
I have been a member of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) at the Spire Washington Hospital for some years and lead in Clinical Governance for the last three years.
For many years I have been involved in surgical training, and assessment. In particular in the form of examining and running examinations for surgical trainees. I am a senior supervising examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a role which takes me all over the world examining on behalf of the College. I was appointed as the Convener of Examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh last year, for a period of three years. This means I am now responsible for standards and quality assurance of all the examination activity run by the College, which runs to 36 different exams. I have also recently been elected to serve on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
I qualified in medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, London and trained in surgery in the Royal Air Force, retiring as a Consultant Surgeon in 1995 with the rank of Wing Commander, moving to Durham to take up my current post.

Personal profile
My leisure activity is taken up by flying a Robinson R22 helicopter, which I own with two other local pilots. I have two grown up children and two grandchildren and live with my partner near Durham.
