Background Information
Professional profile:
My practice is predominantly vascular with particular emphasis on aortic surgery, carotid endartectomy and peripheral bypass surgery. A large bulk of my work is made up of varicose vein surgery in particularly modern treatment of varicose veins including the latest technique of VNUS closure procedure. Locally VNUS procedure is only available privately at Spire Washington Hospital.

My general surgical practice comprises open and laparoscopic hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy of which I perform over 50 annually.

My medical education was in London at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School. Following this I pursued a career as a surgeon in the Royal Air Force reaching the rank of Wing Commander and enjoying postings in Germany, Cyprus and Belize.

My higher surgical training involved time as a senior registrar in NHS hospitals as well as service hospitals, and my vascular training was as a senior registrar at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield.

I retired from the RAF in 1995 and took up a consultant surgeon post with North Durham Healthcare NHS Trust. I am now heavily involved in surgical training. I represent the trust on the regional higher surgical training committee, I am also the surgical training lead for the University Hospital of North Durham. Additionally I am an examiner for the MRCS examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Personal profile:
I am married with two grown up children and live in Durham City. My principal interest when not working is helicopter flying. I part own a Robinson R22 based at Durham Tees Valley airport.

In addition I keep fit by road running and continue to play soccer at 5-a-side level despite advancing years. Gardening, hill walking and DIY keep me amused when not exercising.
