Background Information 
Professional profile:
Upon entry to the orthopaedic speciality in 1985 it was my intention to pursue a career in upper limb surgery, with a background in vascular surgery from Liverpool and basic training in hand surgery at Northwick Park Hospital, London.

I was appointed as senior resident on the Harvard Orthopaedic programme at the Massachusetts General Hospital for one year in 1986/87. Higher surgical training then followed at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital with a special interest in peripheral nerve injury.

I was appointed consultant at Sunderland Royal Hospital in 1991 and held the post of Clinical Director in Trauma and Orthopaedics from 1997 - 2000. I am responsible for organising post graduate training in surgery of the shoulder and elbow for the Northern Region. I was a member of the Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Washington Hospital from 1994 - 1997.
Personal profile:
I am enthusiastic about my practice which has become increasingly focused on the upper limb both in the NHS at Sunderland Royal Hospital and privately at Spire Washington Hospital.

My spell in management as a clinical director has given me much insight into the delicate balance between patient expectations, the cost of healthcare and the responsibilities of the medical profession.

I enjoy sport, which forms a significant proportion of my clinical work.
