Associate Professor Neil McLean is fully trained in all aspects of Aesthetic, Surgical and Medical treatments, including anti-wrinkle injections, skin peeling and the use of Dermal Fillers and Vital injections for the correction of the ageing skin. He has particular expertise in all aspects of Facial Cosmetic Surgery, Aesthetic Breast Surgery, Lip sculpture, Lip modelling, Abdominoplasty, Aesthetic Genital Surgery and the Plastic Surgery management of the patient with massive weight-loss following Bariatric Surgery.
Neil McLean graduated Honours B.Sc. in 1974, M.B.Ch.B. with Commendation in 1976, F.R.C.S. in 1980, M.D. in 1992 and was awarded the Diploma in Aesthetic Surgery with Distinction by the University of London in 2010.
Following training in General Surgery and ENT, he gained Accreditation in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1986 and was appointed Consultant Plastic and reconstructive Surgeon to the Newcastle Upon Tyne Teaching NHS Trust from 1989 to 2002. He was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide and was Deputy Director of the Australian Cranio-Facial Unit in 2003 and is presently Consultant Plastic and reconstructive Surgeon in the Department of Surgery, Wansbeck District General Hospital, Northumberland and has recently set up a skin envelope reducing service for patients with massive weight loss following successful bariatric surgery.
He is a tutor on the Royal College of Surgeons of England Core Skills in Plastic Surgery Course, is a plastic surgery advisor to the Professional Standards Department of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and represents the Royal College on consultant advisory committee panels.
He is a former Council Member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, is a member of the Court of the Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, examining on their behalf both in the United Kingdom and abroad and is an UCAS selector at the Medical School of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. He is also Assessor of the Examiners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, is a Council Member of the North East Medico-Legal Society and President Elect of the North East Surgical Society.
Mr McLean has been elected to the national council of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and will serve on council for the years 2009 – 2011, has been appointed to the role of Honorary Treasurer of BAAPS, and also sits on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery, the Organising Committee of the Advanced Courses in Plastic Surgery and sat on the Advisory Committee of NCPOD from 1998 – 2002. He is a Tutor on the Royal College of Surgeons of England Cadaveric Skills Workshops which are regularly held under the auspices of BAPRAS for the training of junior doctors in surgical techniques, is Tutor on the North East Plastic Surgery Reconstructive Flap Course and is a Founder Member of UKAAPS (UK Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons). He has over 200 presentations to Learned Medical Societies, over 230 original published articles on all aspects of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and his current projects include setting up a Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Service at the Northumbria NHS Trust and being actively involved in the organisation of the Cranio-Facial Training Programme at the University Science Malaysia, where he holds the post of Visiting Professor of Surgery.
