Procedures offered for hip replacement at Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital

At Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital, we have wide experience in hip replacement surgery in our clean, modern facilities. We offer some of the latest surgical innovations, which may be beneficial to some patients. These include:

  • Anterior hip replacement surgery, when incisions are made in the front of the hip, resulting in less pain and faster recovery than with traditional surgery
  • Bilateral hip replacement, when both hips are replaced at the same time

We also have two laminar flow operating theatres which regulate air flow to minimise the risk of infection.

Your consultations

All of your consultations will take place in one of our 11 accessible private rooms, so don’t worry if you have pain when walking. During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need blood tests, an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so they can examine your hip in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called a prosthesis – as well as the surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your consultant and physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

You should be with us for around two days.

You’ll meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for your operation. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a spinal anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. Your anaesthetist can also give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your hip joint. They’ll then fit your new hip and close your incisions. The operation should take between an hour and an hour and a half.
