Our specialist vascular surgeon Mr Waleed Edrees is now running a Vein Clinic at Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital on Monday mornings.

Please find more information about the different vein treatments below.
Stripping
Standard surgery for varicose veins is performed under general anaesthetic and involves stripping of the involved vein and its complete removal from the leg. Recovery time is around 2-3 weeks.
This procedure is increasingly falling out of favour as the preferred treatment option by vascular surgeons and patients.
Endovenous ablation
Minimally invasive modern treatment of varicose veins performed under local anaesthetic as an office or a day case treatment with better outcome than traditional surgery with stripping.
At Spire Tunbridge Wells in Kent this treatment is performed routinely. The treatment usually takes less than an hour and patients return home as soon as the procedure is finished. Normal activities can be resumed directly after the procedure and most patients are back to work within a day or two. There is minimal or no scarring after this procedure.
Radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure)
Modern and minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins where a very small tube called “catheter” is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance and the vein is closed by delivering radiofrequency energy to the vein wall. This causes the vein to shrink, collapse and close.
Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT)
Similar treatment to VNUS Closure. Laser energy is used to close the vein through a fibre introduced into the vein.
Foam sclerotherapy
Liquid medicine or a solution mixed with air is injected directly into the vein using very fine needle, which causes irritation of the vein wall and makes it close.
During your consultation your treatment options will be explained and discussed with you fully by our vascular surgeon Mr Edrees.
