The VNUS Closure® procedure is a minimally-invasive alternative to the surgical treatments of varicose veins. It is estimated that up to 70% of patients requiring treatment could benefit from this effective and less painful form of treatment.
Almost 1 in 3 adults suffer from varicose veins which, if untreated, can lead to health problems such as poor circulation, eczema and ulcers. The most established method for varicose veins requiring treatment is to surgically remove the veins. Whilst this is effective, it can be painful, is performed under general anaesthetic and can often require an overnight stay in hospital.
VNUS Closure® can be performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. It is generally less painful which promotes faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activity, typically within a day. During treatment, a small incision is made and a special tube placed inside the affected vein. The tube is heated up to seal the vein from within.
An alternative form of treatment, also offered at Spire Tunbridge Wells is Edovenous laser treatment (EVLT) which involves delivering laser energy through a small puncture in the leg to close the diseased vein.
Dr JJ de Gorter, Clinical Director of Spire Healthcare commented: “At Spire Healthcare we are always looking for ways to improve the patient experience and we are delighted we can now make VNUS Closure® treatment available. Not only is it more convenient for patients, but it is also much less painful, allowing patients to return home and get on with their lives more quickly.”
