November 2009
World Diabetes Day is due to be celebrated again on 14th November under the slogan “Understand Diabetes and Take Control”. Whilst the campaign lasts for the whole year, the event is held annually on the 14th November, and marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who first discovered insulin in 1922.
Dr Masud Haq, Consultant Diabetologist says “Diabetes poses a huge health problem and can be associated with complications such as heart disease, strokes, kidney failure and blindness. Currently, an estimated 2.5 million people are affected in the UK, but another 750000 people may have ‘Pre-diabetes’, an under-diagnosed condition that increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 15 times”.
He goes on to say, “there are many risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes but obesity, lack of exercise and increasing age are amongst the most common. Individuals are often unaware of their diagnosis but targeted screening can help detect the condition at an early stage.”
Look out for well known attractions such as the London Eye being lit up in blue to mark World Diabetes Day and raise public awareness.
If you are worried about diabetes or would like to find out more about the condition, Dr Haq is happy to see patients regarding all aspects of diabetes.
