What is labial reduction surgery?
All women are different and labial come in different shapes and sizes. However, some women feel that their labia are too large, causing discomfort during activities such as cycling or walking or during sexual intercourse.
Labial reduction is the term used to describe a range of surgical procedures that reduce the size and prominence of the inner lips of the vagina (known as the labia minora).
The operation can be carried out under local anaesthesia, which means that you will be awake, but the area will be completely numb. Sometimes, labial reduction is also done under general anaesthesia (where you are asleep for the procedure).
The operation is routinely carried out as a day-case, with no overnight stay in hospital. Your surgeon will explain the benefits of having labia reduction surgery, and discuss the associated risks and alternatives to the procedure.
About the operation
Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will cut some tissue away, ensuring that the cut is carefully placed to prevent painful scarring along the rim of the labia. The remaining edges are closed with dissolving stitches.
The operation usually takes between one and two hours.
Following a labial reduction you can expect soreness and swelling for a few days and you may need to take some time off work to rest and recover.
Labia reduction surgery is a commonly performed and generally safe surgical procedure. However all surgery carries risks as well as benefits.
The possible complications of any surgery include excessive bleeding during or soon after the operation, infection, or an unexpected reaction to the anaesthetic.
Occasionally, excessive swelling can occur following labia reduction surgery, this usually settles within 10 – 14 days.
The chance of complications depends on the exact type of operation that you are having and other factors such as your general health. Ask your surgeon to explain how any risks apply to you.
As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you thoroughly review your expectations with your surgeon before you decide to proceed.
