The recently published CIPD 2011 Absence Management survey confirmed that the number one cause of long term absence in the UK is stress. Increasing workloads, the pace of organisational change and restructuring, management styles and external pressures are all identified as contributory factors. The survey reports that 58% or organisations are taking steps to identify and reduce stress in the workplace.
The consistent theme emerging from all of the available published research (CIPD, CBI, WHO, MIND) is that the incidence, duration and trend for stress related absence is moving in one direction – up.
