Spire Thames Valley Hospital in Buckinghamshire is proud to promote its comprehensive varicose vein service, offering a range of effective treatments for varicose veins and thread veins. Our treatments can be tailored to your individual needs, whether you have problems with painful veins or they are proving unsightly and embarassing.
We offer new, less invasive methods of treating varicose veins
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted and unsightly veins, usually on the legs, that look lumpy and bluish through the skin. They happen when the valves in the veins become weak or break, allowing blood to collect in the skin instead of being carried up to the heart. The increased pressure can cause aching and other complications such as eczema, discolouration and leg ulceration.
Smaller veins under the skin are sometimes called spider veins or thread veins, although these are unsightly they are not the same as varicose veins and rarely cause discomfort or complications.
Spire Thames Valley offers a number of modern techniques to treat varicose veins and thread veins, including:
- Endovenous laser therapy (EVLA)
- Sclerotherapy
- Surgical removal (tying and stripping of veins under general anaesthetic)
- Laser thread vein removal
Before choosing the best treatment for you, an outpatient assessment appointment will be made with our highly trained specialist nurse. It is vital to assess the nature of your varicose or thread veins, how much trouble they are causing you and how best to treat them.
For varicose veins your legs will be carefully examined and a duplex ultrasound vein scan will be performed to accurately map the anatomy and function of your veins and to determine how best to treat them. This is a painless investigation.
Having obtained all the information required, the consultant will advise the most suitable treatment to achieve the best possible results.
