I have been a consultant general surgeon for nearly 30 years, having worked in that role at Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals until 2017. My principal interests are upper GI surgery, general paediatric surgery and vascular surgery.

I have extensive experience in upper GI surgery (gallbladder, hiatus hernia surgery and open and laparoscopic groin hernia surgery), emergency general surgery and general paediatric surgery, as well as in upper and lower GI endoscopy. Having been appointed as a consultant at the time that laparoscopic surgery was evolving I was involved in the introduction and development of minimally-invasive surgery in a variety of fields.

I have an interest in thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. As a consultant in East Berkshire I performed almost all the elective general paediatric surgery eg for hernia, hydrocele and undescended testis. I continue to perform operations for minor anal disorders such as piles, tags and fissure/fistula-in-ano. I perform large numbers of gastroscopy and colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy investigations.

In my NHS and private practice have performed: over 800 operations for hiatus hernia, more than 800 laparoscopic operations for gallbladder disease, more than 600 inguinal hernia repairs (open and laparoscopic), 100 thoracoscopic sympathectomy operations, more than 500 operations for infantile hernia and hydrocele, more than 500 operations for undescended testis in children and many operations for piles/minor skin lesions.

I spent a four year period as an honorary consultant vascular surgeon at The John Radcliffe Hospital when the vascular service was transferred there between 2012 and 2015, as well as continuing my general surgical practice in East Berkshire. Since leaving Wexham Park, I have worked as a general surgeon in New Zealand for nearly 18 months, in Guernsey for six months last year and in various hospitals in Scotland over the last four years.

As a consultant I ran many courses at Wexham Park and for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as well as with other colleagues, having a major interest in medical education. I was the Programme Director for the higher surgical trainees in the Oxford scheme for trainee surgeons for a five-year period between 2009 and 2014.
