Havin taken a 1st in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College, Dr Makepeace worked briefly in the City before commencing his undergraduate medical education. Having qualified at Kings College, London, he went on to obtain the FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1981 and FRCS (England) the same year. He entered oncology in 1982 obtaining the FRCR in 1985 and was subsequently appointed as a Consultant in Clinical Oncology. Dr Makepeace has been Director of Continuing Professional Development, Member of the Education Board and the Training Accrediation Committee of the Royal College of Radiologists; during this period, he was also a committee member of the Academy of Royal Colleges. Dr Makepeace is currently a member of the Accreditation Committee and a member of the Appraisal Approvals Panel of the Postgradute Medical and Education Training Board. He is also a expert reviewer in Oncology for the Healthcare Commission. Dr Makepeace's clinical interest are centred on the management of breast and colorectal cancer.
