Spire Sussex Hospital now offers X-Stop spinal surgery for patients with spinal stenosis. The procedure is performed by Mr Guy Selmon, consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
X-Stop is unlike other forms of surgery for spinal stenosis as it can be performed under regional anaesthetic. The X-stop is a titanium implant, which is placed between the spinous processes of the affected level of your lumbar spine. The X-Stop is held safely in place behind the spinal cord by wings that prevent it from moving. It therefore does not directly attach to any bone or ligaments, and is not close to the nerves of the spinal cord.
The X-Stop is inserted under x-ray guidance, through a small incision in the skin on the lower back. The procedure takes approximately 45 – 90 minutes, and most patients return home within 24 hours of surgery.
