Mr Butler-Manuel trained at St Thomas' Hospital, London, qualifying in 1981. After training on Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital rotation, he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Conquest Hospital in 1993.

His main interests are knee surgery, hip replacement and trauma surgery. Mr Butler-Manuel performs all types of knee surgery including arthroscopic surgery, knee ligament reconstruction surgery, osteotomies for anterior knee pain and arthritis, unicondylar knee replacement, including patello-femoral replacements and total knee replacement.

Mr Butler-Manuel is involved in a number of clinical research projects at the Conquest Hospital investigating various types of knee replacement, in particular, comparing cemented and uncemented hydroxyapatite coated knee replacements.

Mr Butler-Manuel also has an interest in hip replacement surgery and is involved in clinical trials evaluating cemented against uncemented hydroxyapatite coated hip replacements.

Mr Butler-Manuel maintains an interest in trauma care and surgery and also enjoys performing surgery for low back pain and foot surgery.

Mr Butler-Manuel is happily married with three young children and has a working wife who is a consultant radiologist.

When he finds the time, he enjoys sporting activities, especially tennis and golf. In his youth, Mr Butler-Manuel used to be a keen footballer but now has to make do with watching his sons Tom and Will play, watching on the television and the occasional 5-a-side game!
