Dr Ayerst is a South African trained dermatologist with a pre-specialisation background in paediatrics, general medicine and ITU. Much of this was done while working in the national military medical services. His more unusual training and experiences include diving and submarine medicine, African tropical diseases, chemical and biological warfare defence and operational support. He spent extended periods developing and working in field hospitals and was attached to various Peacekeeping and UN exercises.
He attended the University of Cape Town attached to the renowned Groote Schuur Hospital for undergraduate training and specialised at the University of Pretoria. He resettled in Kent with his family in 2003 and has been with the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust since.
While primarily working as a general dermatologist covering the full spectrum of diagnostics, treatments and surgery he has a special interest in skin cancer management and male genital dermatoses. He is the skin cancer lead and MDT chair for East Kent and chaired the Kent and Medway Cancer Network Skin Cancer Site Specific Group for many years. He also serves on the Clinical Services Unit and Skin Cancer Sub-committee of the British Association of Dermatologists and regularly presents at national teaching and development events.
