Weight loss surgery
Spire Southampton Hospital offers safe and effective weight loss surgery, also known as obesity surgery or bariatric surgery, to patients from Southampton, Hampshire and beyond. Our consultants perform around 160 weight loss surgery operations each year. Mr Michael van den Bossche, Mr Jim Byrne, Mr Jamie Kelly and Mr Ian Bailey all use keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery techniques, meaning there is no need for a big incision. After all surgery follow up appointments with the surgeon and dietitian are provided.
Weight loss surgery available at Spire Southampton Hospital includes:
- Gastric banding – usually requires a one night stay with follow up appointments for band fills
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass – more complex surgery, usually resulting in more rapid weight loss and requiring a three night stay in hospital
- Sleeve gastrectomy – reduces stomach size to about one third and requires a three night stay in hospital
- Biliopancreatic diversion and duodenal switch (BPD-DS) – a combination of sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. This is more extensive surgery requiring a three or four night stay
Non surgical weight loss
Our registered dietitian has many year’s experience in weight loss methods and offers a non-surgical weight loss programme. This involves a comprehensive assessment of your lifestyle, measurement of body fat and muscle, and the creation of a diet and exercise programme individually tailored to you. After the initial consultation you may have as many, or as few, follow up appointments as you would like - there is no pressure. We offer flexible appointment times including early mornings and Saturdays.
Spire Southampton Hospital is committed to providing the best quality care for all our patients and you will be treated in a safe, clean and comfortable environment.
