Mr Newsom trained in London, at Kings and University College; Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. Initial Ophthalmology training was in Windsor, followed by St Thomas' Hospital London.
Specialist vitreoretinal training was then undertaken at Southampton Eye Unit and Moorfields Eye Hospital, and medical retina training at the New England Medical Center, Boston USA.
Mr Newsom has published over 70 ophthalmology papers, as well as writing a textbook and contributing several ophthalmology chapters to other books. Mr Newsom is a NICE advisor for AMD treatment and an examiner for the College of Ophthalmologists.
He is involved with developing new treatments for macular degeneration, and vitreoretinal disease, as well as offering specialized multifocal lenses for patients needing cataract surgery
Mr Newsom is happily married with two children. He is involved with his local church. Mr Newsom enjoys running, cycling and sailing, he has recently completed his second marathon and became a Yachtmaster in 2008. He has served as an Eye Surgeon ‘The Africa Mercy’ in West Africia and supports an orphanage in Kenya, Hope Family Homes.
