    Background Information
    Professional profile:

Mr Mathad completed his neurosurgical training from King Edward Memorial Hospital, Bombay in 1989. He then worked as the Asst Prof of Neurosurgery in a university approved hospitals for 5 years.

After working for 30 months at the Ministry of Health in Oman, he started his career in Preston in 1997.  Here he gained significant experience in vascular and spinal neurosurgery following which he moved to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.  He obtained his diploma from The European Association of Neurological Societies in 2002.

He joined The Wessex Neurological Centre in 2003 to complete his specialist training.  He was appointed a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Wessex Neurological centre in May 2006.

He regularly performs anterior skull base surgery with maxillo-facial surgeons and lateral skull base surgery with neuro-otologists.  Recently he has started endonasal endoscopic skull base surgery, combining his skills with that of his rhinologist colleague, Mr Salil Nair.  This involves accessing central skull base tumours (and pituitary tumours) using endoscopes through nose. This minimal access surgery is at the cutting edge of endoscopic skull base surgery.

As a paediatric neurosurgeon he cares for children with head injuries, brain tumours and hydrocephalus.  By using endoscopic techniques he makes every effort to keep children with hydrocephalus shunt free.

He is a core neurosurgeon in paediatric neuro-oncology MDT, skull base MDT and Pituitary and Craniopharyngioma MDT.
