Mr Haw is an experienced cardiac surgeon with 17 years as an NHS consultant. He gained his medical degree at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in London. His early surgical training was at Charing Cross and then at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Mr Haw undertook basic research at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA developing a model of cardiac transplantation in rats. He was awarded his thesis by the University of London.
On returning to the UK he was trained in adult cardiac surgery at Birmingham, Southampton and the Hammersmith Hospital, and in paediatric cardiac surgery at Southampton and Great Ormand Street Hospital. In 1994 he won a travelling bursary and visited Boston Children's Hospital and the Mott Children's Hospital, Ann Arbour, before taking up a consultant position in Harefield Hospital, London.
In 1997 his current post became available in Southampton. As a consultant cardiac surgeon he has a wide experience in both adult and paediatric cardiac surgery. Although he no longer undertakes basic research he maintains a keen interst in clinical research with over 70 peer review articles to his name.
