I have received supervised training in all general, regional and local anaesthetic techniques and have gained experience in providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, plastics, maxillofacial surgery, dental, ENT, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, day case surgery, renal and neurosciences.
Intensive care experience has ranged from units of 4 beds to those with 11 beds and has encompassed general, neurosciences, cardiothoracic and surgical subspecialities. I have gained skills in line placement, percutaneous tracheostomies and in supportive therapies, including haemofiltration techniques, ventilatory support and use of inotropes. I have become proficient in the transfer of critically ill patients following the AAGBI guidelines.
The hospitals I have worked in have had excellent diagnostic imaging facilities and I have gained experience in managing patients in the Radiology Department of CT and MRI scanning.
I have been involved in providing an Acute Pain Service, regularly managing the daily Acute Pain Ward Rounds and have experience in techniques for post-operative pain relief, including PCAs, epidurals,PCEAs and nerve blockade. I have completed training in Chronic Pain and I have carried out a variety of chronic pain procedures in theatre under supervision.
Durning the course of my training I have always taken every opportunity to develop my interest in major general anaesthesia and have actively sought education from those consultants who are experts in this area. The result of this has made me both confident and competent in anaesthetising for both upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery including oesophagogastrectomies, Whipple's operation and a full range of large and small bowel resections. Skills developed have allowed me to appropriately manage aspects of patient care including: pre-optimisation,invasive monitoring, use of epidurals and managing major fluid shifts and blood loss.
