I qualified in 1974 at Glasgow University, with postgraduate qualifications in medicine and haematology achieved in west of Scotland training schemes. I was appointed as consultant haematologist in Southampton in 1982, providing clinical and diagnostic services in haematology. I developed facilities for care of adults with leukaemic disorders and multiple myeloma in Southampton. My clinical and research practice involves both my specialist interests in haematology malignancy and general haematology practice, especially anaemia.
I have been associated with Spire Southampton Hospital since its' opening and my practice reflects my NHS work; complex haematological cases privately referred are manaeged in private facilities in the NHS hospitals. I am also aware of organisational aspects of healthcare, particularly as service director for pathology in Southampton University Hospitals.
I was born in 1949 in Glasgow and married with two daughters. My wife is a General Practitioner in the New Forest. I moved to Hampshire from the west of Scotland in 1982.
Although my time is very much taken up with the challenges of a busy clinical practice, I retain a range of non-medical interests. Apart from my family, my interests include walking, ornithology, travel, sport and reading. I have particular interests in music - as a listener and participant. I am presently studying singing and am currently a member of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus.
