On Tuesday 26th May 2009, 10:30pm, Channel 4's The Operation: Surgery Live will broadcast live awake brain surgery carried out by Mr Paul Grundy. During the operation called "Awake Craniotomy" Mr Grundy will remove a suspected brain tumour from a patient while they are awake.
Mr Grundy is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Southampton Univeristy Hospitals Wessex Neurological Centre and Spire Southampton Hospital. He is responsible for developing the widespread use of both awake and day-case surgery for brain tumours in the UK and performs both awake craniotomy and craniotomy procedures at Spire Southampton Hospital.
The programme will be streamed live to the Wellcome Collection and broadcast simultaneously on Channel 4 and the audience and viewers will have the chance to put questions to the team performing the operation at the Wessex Neurological Centre. This show is part of a series of life-changing operations carried out in front of a studio audience including open heart surgery, keyhole stomach repair and pituitary tumour removal.
