Georgie Collins, cosmetic nurse advisor

May can be a busy time of year for patients considering cosmetic/plastic surgery. May Day typically marks the end of harsh winters and May is the time when people think about the summer months and often consider cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments, in the anticipation of summer.

I often find that one of the most popular procedures in May are non-surgical anti-wrinkle treatments which are used to soften lines and give a refreshed appearance. As the sun begins to shine lines often become more noticeable and people want to feel more confident for the summer months ahead.

The anti-wrinkle injections we use is a prescription medicine that is injected into the muscles in the forehead, glabella (frown line between the eyebrows) and crow's feet (smile lines around eyes) to soften residual dynamic lines for a period of usually three-four months. The injections are a purified protein which temporarily paralyses the muscle to soften lines and smooth out wrinkles in the skin.

Patients typically want to look well and fresh, not 'wind swept' so a thorough consultation and discussion is essential before the treatment is planned and administered by a fully registered practitioner. I find that patients are really pleased with the results after their anti-wrinkle injections and become regular patients who continue to come in when the treatment begins to wear off to maintain their refreshed appearance.

Patients are naturally very nervous when trying this treatment for the first time. I encourage them to start treatment softly in just one area, then when I see them for a repeat treatment they are usually that happy that they want treatment in an additional area.

I would always recommend that patients see a trained professional with a lot of experience. At Spire Southampton Hospital I always offer free informal consultations so patients can just come in for a chat. Sometimes I look at the lines and know they will get a really good result but sometimes I advise that these anti-wrinkle injections won’t be as effective as they hope because the lines are static and recommend that they really think carefully before having the treatment.

Following treatment patients often change their hair style as they don’t feel the need to have a long fringe anymore, once the lines have been softened. So moving towards the summer months they have a fresh new hair style and fewer wrinkles and feel much more confident.
