Your referral journey
- If you experience untoward symptoms, contact your GP
- Your GP can refer you to one of our hospital consultants
- Your consultant will carry out a set of investigations to identify the cause of your symptoms, and may include a physical examination, blood tests, scans and biopsies
- If cancer is detected, you will be referred to one of our oncologists or surgeons
- You may have surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy as part of your treatment. You may receive all of these treatments options at Spire Southampton Hospital. Your treatment
It may be the case that you receive all elements of your care within the unit, from chemotherapy to supportive therapies and follow-up care. Treatment regimes vary, and you may be asked to attend the unit for 2 hours or up to 8 hours per session. With this in mind, we have designed the treatment bays to make your stay as comfortable as possible. There are eight treatment bays with chemotherapy couches in each area and they are separated by wooden panel walls offering our patients individual privacy. There are also chairs in each treatment bay for your visitors to sit and relax with you while you are receiving your treatment. All the treatment bays also have televisions and internet access or you may simply prefer to read a book with a cup of tea or coffee. You also have the option of getting your bloods checked and your toxicities assessed at the unit, the day prior to chemotherapy. This in turn speeds up the length of time you need to spend in the chemotherapy unit on the day of your treatment.
Support and advice
We think that one of the most important parts of cancer care is providing you with the latest information on cancer treatment and the disease. The oncology team keep up-to-date with all the latest in oncology developments. You are given contact details for the unit on your first treatment and advised to contact us with any queries. You are also given your consultants contact details and emergency contact details are also available for you, your carers and your GP.
Exemplary clinical care goes hand in hand with the need to consider your psychological and social wellbeing. Through establishing links with the Wessex Cancer Trust, Jane Scarth House and Macmillan, we will be able to offer a wide range of supportive care options for both you and your family.
Scalp cooling
Hair loss, or alopecia, is a known side effect of some chemotherapy drugs. Scalp cooling can be used in certain circumstances to prevent or ease hair loss during treatment. It involves the use of a refridgerated scalp cooling system which is applied to the head during chemotherapy and works by reducing the amount of blood flow to the scalp, therfore reducing the quantity of the chemotherapy that reaches the hair follicles, reducing or preventing hair loss.
Funding treatment
Most medical insurers will cover the cost of chemotherapy, however, please contact your insurance provider before commencing any treatment. If you do not have private medical insurance you can pay for the treatment yourself.
