    Background Information
    Professional profile:
Clinical: I qualified in medicine in 1987 from Nottingham University Medical School, achieving an Honours degree. After house appointments in Nottingham, I completed my general professional training in Stoke-on-Trent, where I also began my neurology training. I first came to Edinburgh in 1992 and was appointed consultant in 1999, following a year in Australia in 1997 as advanced neurological trainee. I am a full-time NHS consultant, undertaking two general neurology clinics, one movement disorder and one "First Seizure" clinic per week and I provide neurological services to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. I also participate in multi-disciplinary clinics for Huntington's disease, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and unruptured intracranial aneurysms. In addition to my NHS practice, I undertake a weekly private clinic at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital.

Academic: I was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in 1996 for research into stroke medicine and have published over 20 original papers in peer reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine (2007, treatment of Bell's palsy). I am a sub-editor of Practical Neurology. I lecture frequently to GPs, hospital physicians and patient organisations. I am also a member of several committees.
    Personal profile:
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, eating, drinking and travelling with my young family.
