Professor Ian Kunkler is a consultant and Honorary Professor of Clinical Oncology at the Western General Hospital, University of  Edinburgh. He qualified in medicine from Cambridge University in 1978, completing clinical studies at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London.

He trained in medicine in Nottingham (MRCP UK 1981) and in radiotherapy and oncology at Edinburgh University (FRCR 1985). He was a French government and EEC Research Fellow at Institute Gustave Roussy in Paris from 1986-7 and consultant and lecturer in radiotherapy and oncology at Weston Park Hospital and Sheffield University from 1988-1992.

He returned to Edinburgh in 1992 as a senior specialist in breast oncology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1995. His clinical and research interests are in trials in breast oncology. He is Chief Investigator the MRC SUPREMO and the PRIME 2 trials of postoperative radiotherapy in early breast cancer and lectures internationally in this field.  He is a member of the Breast International Group and of the editorial board of the European Journal of Cancer. He is co-author of Walter and Miller's Textbook of Radiotherapy and has published widely in the field of breast cancer. Professor Kunkler is a past President of the British Oncological Association.
