Mr Shami first qualified at Charing Cross Hospital, London, in 1977 and obtained his training in various London hospitals.
He became a Consultant Surgeon in 1995, with a specialism in vascular, colorectal and paediatric surgery. More recently, Mr Shami has been Clinical Director of Surgery and Associate Medical Director, as well as surgical tutor, at the Royal College of Surgeons.
Mr Shami has previously been Assistant Professor in Surgery at the Jordan University of Science and Technology and Clinical Director of Surgery and Surgical Tutor at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust. He has written a book on surgery and is in the process of editing another one on varicose veins.
