Mr Kananbar is a fully accredited, fellowship-trained orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with a subspecialty interest in shoulder and upper limb surgery. He undertook his orthopaedic and trauma surgery training in Liverpool and East Anglia, and then specialist shoulder training at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Mr Kanabar completed his shoulder and upper limb training with a fellowship at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital with remowned surgeons Mr A.D. Patel, Mr Peter Hallam, Mr Peter Chapman and Mr Adrian Chojnowski.
As a shoulder surgeon, Mr Kanabar's specialties cover a wide range of complications and conditions caused by sports injuries, including recurrent instability, SLAP tear, rotator cuff pathologies, frozen shoulder and arthritis of the glenohumeral and acromio-clavicular joints.
Mr Kanabar performs much of his soft tissue shoulder surgery via arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques; for example, subacromial decompression, Bankart and SLAP tear repair, rotator cuff repair and capsular release. He also performs 'open' shoulder surgical procedures such as total shoulder replacement, resurfacing hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder, reverse polarity shoulder replacement, as well as open repair of massive rotator cuff tears.
Apart from shoulder surgery, Mr Kanabar performs arthroscopic surgery of the elbow, as well as total elbow replacement for arthritis and trauma.
Mr Kanabar's upper limb specialties also include surgical procedures of the hand and wrist, including wrist fusion, surgery for rheumatoid hands (with small joint replacement), management of scaphoid fracture and dupytren's contracture.
As an experienced orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Kanabar lectures to medical students on the Norfolk & Norwich FRCS Orthopaedic course. He is also an AO instructor and teaches on the national AO courses for principles of fracture management. Mr Kanabar is the Educational Supervisor (Clinical Tutor) for the Orthopaedic Department at Newham University Hospital in east London.
