Dr Grainger was a student at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and completed his training in gastroenterology at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He was appointed consultant physician at King George Hospital, Ilford, in 1989 and is senior gastroenterologist. 
 
With a large NHS and private practice in inflammatory bowel disease, Dr Grainger also has an additional particular interest in complex irritable bowel syndrome and liver disorders. He is also a medical adviser to the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s disease and is a topic lead for the gastroenterology and liver diseases specialist library of the National Library for Health.
 
Dr Grainger has participated in research in functional disorders of the gut, peptic ulcer and inflammatory bowel disease. He has written and lectured on many medical topics and has published more than a score of scientific papers.
