An AAA (Abdominal aortic aneurysm) is a widening or bulge in the aorta (the largest artery in the body). An AAA usually occurs at a weak spot in the aortic wall. If your AAA ruptures (bursts) it can be fatal, so you may need surgery to repair it.
You are more likely to develop an AAA, depending on:
- Your gender (men are more likely to develop an AAA than women)
- If you smoke
- Your age - AAA's are more common in people over 65
- Your family history, if you have a first degree relative who has had an AAA, you have a higher chance of having one yourself
- If you have high blood pressure
- If you do little physical activity
- If you have high cholesterol
- If you are overweight
Patients who are anxious about aneurysms are able to self-refer to our radiology department. Aneurysms are difficult to detect on routine examinations and in the majority of cases, cause the patient no warning symptoms, even when of considerable size. Ultrasound is the most sensitive technique for detecting and imaging aneurysms.
