Balloon Kyphoplasty gets Professor back on his feet

Spire Regency Hospital has given a man who broke his back a new lease of life after a pioneering operation to inject cement into his spine.

Professor Jeffrey Ramsbottom, 67, had fractured two vertebra falling down stairs. He was unable to sit, stand or walk without constant pain however a 90-minute keyhole operation at Spire Regency Hospital on West Street has enabled Prof Ramsbottom to walk out the next day pain-free.

Surgeon Mr Vikas Kapoor at the Spire Regency used an innovative new procedure called balloon kyphoplasty. During the procedure tiny balloons are inserted either side of the damaged vertebra, then inflated to create a space which is filled with bone cement. The aim is to stabilise the fracture using the cement and allow the spine to move without pain.
