Private varicose vein treatment and surgery in Portsmouth

It's not only the cosmetic appearance of varicose veins that causes concern, they can often become very uncomfortable causing aching, itchiness and pain. Many women as well as men are affected by variose veins, in fact up to three in ten people willl suffer from them during their lives.

What is the best treatment for me?

At your first consultant appointment, your legs will be fully assessed including a full ultrasound scan. The Ultrasound scan identifies how the individual veins in your legs are functioning. Your consultant will advise and discuss with you which treatment or combination of techniques is most suited to you, for the best possible results.

At Spire Portsmouth Hospital we are able to offer a variety of methods to treat varicose veins, each has different advantages.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

This will be carried out under general anaesthetic. The exact method used to remove varicose veins can vary. A commonly performed technique, called ligation and stripping, involves tying off and removing the main vein affected in your leg.

Two small cuts are made, one in the groin at the top of the affected vein and one at the knee or near your ankle.

Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy offers a new non-surgical treatment for varicose veins. It's aim is to destroy the main surface vein causing the varicose vein.

Performed in our out-patient department, a local anaesthetic is applied to the leg to numb the treatment area. Under guidance of an ultrasound scanner, the foam is injected directly into the affected vein.
It often takes more than one treatment to achieve the desired result.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT™)

EVLT™ is another non-surgical method for treating varicose veins. It is usually performed under local anaesthetic as a day case.

A laser probe is passed into the vein, as it is withdrawn the laser seals the vein. Once the vein is sealed, blood-flow is re-directed through other healthier veins in the leg. Less invasive than surgery, bruising and discomfort is minimised.

VNUS™ Closure Procedure

Another non-surgical technique that is very similar to the laser treatment. A catheter is inserted into the vein, as it is withdrawn the vein is sealed using heat from a radio frequency controlled catheter, that causes the vein wall to shrink. After the vein is sealed, blood naturally re-routes to healthy veins. Less invasive than surgery, bruising and discomfort is minimised.
