Mr Stuart Mercer's NHS practice ranges from general and emergency surgery to highly specialised upper GI surgery. He treats benign and malignant disease including gastro-oesophageal reflux and hiatus hernias, oesophago-gastric cancer, and gallstone disease, using advanced laparoscopic procedures as appropriate. He also carries out laparoscopic and open hernia repairs, which can sometimes be done as a day-case.
Stuart Mercer qualified at Oxford University and spent the 3 years after his house-jobs travelling the world on ships and submarines as a Medical Officer in the Royal Navy. On his return to dry land, he gained a broad surgical training, initially in Plymouth and then in Portsmouth, before specialising in upper GI surgery in the Wessex region, with fellowships at St Mary's Hospital London and the Royal Marsden. His main hobby is mountaineering, adding each year to his tally of 4000m Alpine peaks. Mr Mercer's wife Jenny is an Anaesthetist in Southampton and his 2 small boys keep him young.
