Mr Rakesh Jayaswal is a full time Consultant Ophthalmologist practising at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.  His major interest and subspecialisation is corneal and external eye disease. He has been appointed in Portsmouth to lead and develop a specialised corneal service, and is able to provide all current treatments and techniques in the management of corneal and external eye disease.

Having trained at Manchester University, Mr Jayaswal trained in surgery prior to embarking on his ophthalmic training.  During his training he worked at several major institutions including London, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. He has also worked as a lecturer and anatomy demonstrator for undergraduate students.  His corneal trianing was with Professor Dua in Nottingham and leading consultants at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital where he was a fellow.

Mr Jayaswal offers routine and complex micro-incisional cataract surgery, together with specialist knowledge and skills in corneal surgery, including corneal transplantation, collagen cross-linking and refractive surgery including LASEK, LASIK and lens exchange.

He specialises in the management of keratoconus, dry eyes, recurrent erosion syndrome, pterygium, corneal dystophies and watery eyes.  He performs anterior lamellar transplants (DALK), endothelial transplants (DSEK) or full thickness transplantation (PK).

He has several publications in peer reviewed ophthalmology journals, presented at national and international conferences and has been invited as a guest reviewer for Ophthalmic Journals.

Personal profile:

Mr Jayaswal likes to keep a good work life balance and achieves this via sport and music.  He regularly plays cricket, football and tennis, enjoys skiing and is a keen runner hoping to run a half marathon soon.
