Mr Brinkmann has been a Consultant Surgeon in Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology since 2005. He is currently the lead in Gynaecological Oncology at Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth (NHS) and also practices at Spire Portsmouth Hospital (private).
Mr Brinkmann qualified in medicine from the University of Cape Town with a first class in obstetrics and gynaecology. Having successfully completed the American medical exams, he spent time in the US at Brown University working as a clinical lecturer and resident. During this time he undertook training in ultrasound at Harvard University Medical School (Beth Israel Hospital).
Returning to the UK, Mr Brinkmann specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology at King's College Hospital, London which included time in other South Thames regional hospitals.
Since Gynaecology is the only current speciality requiring super-specialisation for cancer, Mr Brinkmann undertook a two year research programme under the supervision of Professor Ian Jacobs at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. During this time he collaborated on the UKCTOCS programme (UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening), the largest cancer screening research programme in the world. He also published his own research on ovarian cancer, resulting in a high impact factor publication in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, together with other peer reviewed articles on cervical cancer screening and numerous publications and presentations.
He subsequently entered the subspecialist training programme in gynaecological oncology (surgery) in the Central South Coast Cancer Network based in Portsmouth and Southampton. He is now accredited to both gynaecology and gynaecological oncology. He is a recognised laparoscopic surgeon by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and registered colposcopist by the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
Mr Brinkmann offers a specialist service for both general gynaecology and gynaecological cancer (surgery). Having trained with some of the UK's most respected professors and consultants in both general gynaecology and gynaecological cancer, he is well placed to deliver quality healthcare with both empathy and expertise.
Mr Brinkmann conducts clinics on Wednesday afternoons and operating lists on Monday mornings. Patients concerned about potential symptoms of cancer should inform Mr Brinkmann's secretary upon making an appointment to try for a rapid consultation wherever possible.
