Mr O'Leary has been a consultant General Surgeon in Portsmouth for five years, with a major interest in coloproctology. Benign and malignant colorectal disease account for the majority of his NHS and private practice.
His ongoing clinical aim is to improve the process of care of patients with colorectal disease in order to improve clinical outcomes.
His private practice is based at Spire Portsmouth Hospital, where he has a weekly clinic, operating sessions and colonoscopy facilities.
Mr O'Leary is lead clinician for Colorectal Cancer Services for Portsmouth NHS Trust and Chairman of the Colorectal Site Specific Group of the Central South Coast Cancer Network. He is president of the Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Ileostomy Association. He is a trainer for courses in basic surgical skills, care of the critically ill surgical patient and M27 coloproctology course.
After medical school at University College Dublin, Mr O'Leary trained to FRCSI in Ireland. He then went on a research fellowship at Boston University.
He returned as lecturer in surgery in Sheffield and did his higher surgical training in Bristol and the South West. He completed training in coloproctology at St Mark's Hospital, London.
His wife is a doctor; they have four children and live in Waterlooville. When he is not working Mr O'Leary enjoys spending time with his family.
